What is the Bin Trim Program?

The Bin Trim Equipment Rebates Program is a NSW Environment Protection Authority initiative that supports businesses to reduce waste and increase recycling. Rebates of up to $50,000 – covering up to 50% of eligible equipment costs – are available for NSW businesses that:

  • Have a commercial and industrial (C&I) waste service on site
  • Hold a valid ABN and employ at least one full-time employee in NSW
  • Send business waste to landfill or recycle it within NSW

Eligible equipment includes balers, compactors, crushers and other on-site recycling technologies that help your business avoid, reduce, reuse or recycle waste (read more about the rebates).

How the Bin Trim Rebate Works

To access the Bin Trim rebates, we recommend you to:

  • Complete a Bin Trim waste assessment using the free Bin Trim Business App or contact bin.trim@epa.nsw.gov.au
  • Obtain a quote from Mil-tek for eligible equipment
  • Submit your Bin Trim application Form 1 via SmartyGrants
  • If approved, sign your Funding Deed and install your equipment
  • Submit proof of purchase and complete the follow-up waste assessment

Applications are open and ongoing until 30 June 2027 or until funds are expended

Is My Business Eligible?

To be eligible for the Bin Trim Equipment Rebates Program, your business must:

  • Be located in New South Wales
  • Have a commercial and industrial waste service at the site
  • Employ at least one full-time employee
  • Have a valid Australian Business Number (ABN)
  • Send business waste to landfill or recycle waste generated in NSW (read more about the program here).

Charities, schools, hospitals and government organisations may also be eligible.

Critical deadlines in the process after funding application:

  • Submit Form 1 – Following the initial waste assessment, applicant submits Form 1 – Application Form (with required attachments) https://epa.smartygrants.com.au/
  • EPA assesses and decides application – Between 4-6 weeks following submission of a complete Form 1.
  • Accept the rebate – Within 30 days of receiving a Funding Deed, by executing the Funding Deed
  • Start using the equipment – Within 3 months of executing a Funding Deed, applicant procures, installs and commences use of equipment or technology
  • Submit Form 2 – Within 3 months of executing a Funding Deed, applicant submits Form 2 – Equipment Procured (with required attachments)
  • Complete Form 2 – Within 30 days of receiving a complete Form 2, the EPA provides rebate funding
  • Complete the follow-up waste assessment – using the Bin Trim App. Between 3 to 6 months after installing and commencing use of the equipment or technology.
  • Submit form 3 – Between 3 to 6 months after installing and commencing use of the equipment or technology and after the follow-up waste assessment –  Outcomes Report (with required attachments)
  • Operate and maintain the equipment – For 12 months from the date of installation (if leased) OR for 5 years from the date of installation (if purchased).
