After analysing the current cost of waste and cleaning, and calculating the savings based on 50 percent reduction of bin removal and cleaning, it was clear that the balers would be paid for in less than 18 months.
This hotel is a perfect example of a beautiful property that has implemented a Mil-tek waste solution, reducing its waste production and saving money.
Rachel Baigent is the managing director of Mil-tek Waste Solutions Queensland. Rachel contacted Mr Murray Rowbotham who is the general manager of the Hotel Urban to ascertain whether there were opportunities to assist with reducing his waste bills.
She explained: “Mr Rowbotham was keen for us to come to the site and conduct an audit, he had a number of issues that he wanted addressed. They included the high cost of having numerous bins onsite and the regular cleaning required to reduce odours eminating from bins. The bins are located opposite residential properties so this regular cleaning was both necessary and expensive. The staff were also forced to push all the bins out to the roadside for servicing each time.”
The complimentary on site audit indicated that the Mil-tek solution was viable. The small footprint balers could be located in the bin room, allowing the staff to maintain their current practice for the most part. Whole cardboard boxes could be loaded straight into the cardboard baler without being flatpacked or folded down, saving staff time. The resulting reduction in volume from compacting the cardboard dramatically reduced the number of cardboard skip bins required and the frequency of collection.
Ms Baigent continued: “After analysing the current cost of waste and cleaning, and calculating the savings based on 50 percent reduction of bin removal and cleaning, it was clear that the balers would be paid for in less than 18 months. An ongoing saving of $12,000 per year.
“Based on these figures and also his prior knowledge of a previous successful install, Mr Rowbotham decided to install the Mil-tek hotel-restaurant waste management solution at Hotel Urban.”
"Within our business, Mil-tek forecast that the balers will pay for themselves in just over 12 months with an estimated saving of $12,000 to our waste management costs in the 2nd year. The savings are forecasted to accumulate year on year. The Hotel has experienced a large reduction in the amount of bins being collected in addition to improving the cleanliness of the waste management area. This is proving to be a very good investment for our company."

The Mil-tek Model XP200S stainless steel general waste compactor and Model 102HD cardboard & plastic baler were delivered and installed within a week of ordering, and training of staff was duly conducted.
The hotel saw an immediate reduction in the number of bins used: the general waste 1100 litre bins were reduced from three bins to one and the cardboard from two bins to one per collection.
Ms Baigent said: “Hotel Urban has adopted Waste Management Best Practices in an effort to reduce waste costs and to limit their impact on the environment.
“Staff love the balers as they are easy and safe to use and with fewer bins to push outside. Staff can be more productive in areas that are more warranted. The aesthetic appeal now matches the overall architectural ambience because the number of bins outside has been halved.”
“Hotel Urban has seen immediate cost savings and so the Mil-tek waste solutions has been a great investment for them.
